Renovation and restoration of the statue of Diego de Gardoqui in Philadelphia

In conjunction with the City Hall’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Iberdrola has sponsored the restoration of the statue of Diego de Gardoqui, which stands in Philadelphia’s Sister Cities Park. The statue, by Luis Sanguino, was given to the city by His Majesty Juan Carlos, on his first state visit to America in 1976. Restoration work was carried out in Fall, 2019.

Gardoqui played a major role in the American Revolutionary War, and was officially appointed by the Spanish Crown to arrange for he sending of supplies and loans to Congress. In 1785, he visited New York as Spain’s first ambassador to the United States.
